I-9 Verfication for Internationals
Federal law requires proof of identity and proof of employment eligibility for all employees. For visa holders, please note that state-issued Drivers Licenses and Social Security Cards are insufficient documentation for I-9 purposes. The supporting documents that must accompany the hire packet are:
U.S. citizens:
*Please see the back of the I-9 form for a list of acceptable documents which show proof of identity and employment eligibility.
Individuals on an F-I Visa:
- Passport – the page showing the holder’s photo, biographical information, passport #, issue and expiration dates.
- Visa (found in the passport)
- I-94 Departure Record (both sides)
- I-20 (both sides) for students on F-1 Visa
- NOTE: An Employment Authorization Card is needed for students who have applied for and were issued a change in visa status.
Individuals on a J-1 Visa:
- Passport – the page showing the holder’s photo, biographical information, passport #, issue and expiration dates.
- Visa (found in the passport)
- I-94 Departure Record (both sides)
- DS 2016 (both sides) for students on J-1 Visa
- NOTE: An Employment Authorization Card is needed for students who have applied for and were issued a change in visa status.
Verification of the I-9 Form:
The person who verifies the substantiating documents for employment eligibility on the I-9 form must:
- Under section 2 on the I-9, list the documents used to verify identity and employment eligibility
- Copy substantiating I-9 documents and staple the copies to the I-9 form; and
- Sign and date the I-9 form under the Certification section.
