Advisement Process

Academic advisement is an essential component of an education at Georgia State, and the university is committed to providing advice and assistance that students need at every step of their degree programs.

Undergraduate Students


Undergraduate students receive advisement from three sources as they progress through their degree programs:

  • Student Advisement Center 
    All freshmen and new transfer students who have fewer than 42 credit hours, undecided majors, and students in the Academic Improvement Program are advised through the university' Student Advisemen Center (255 Sparks)
  • A&S Offce of Academic Assistance
    All undergraduate students who have earned 42 hours or more and have declared a major should seek advisement from the Academic Assistance office.  
  • Department Advisors and Directors
    Majors receive advice from faculty and staff in their major department about program options and special learning opportunities

Graduate Students

Graduate students receive advisement from two sources as they progress through their degree programs:

  • Department Graduate Directors and Advisors 
    Majors receive advice from department graduate directors and facuty advisors in their major department about program options and special learning opportunities
  • A&S Graduate Services
    Office advisors provide guidance from before admission, as students enter a specific program, and as graduation approaches
